Located in the ‘international zone’ of The Hague – the City of Justice, Peace and Security, the T.M.C. Asser Instituut - a distinctive, inter-university research Institute specialised in International and European law - is a unique clustering of knowledge and experience in scholarly research, education and training, knowledge management and dissemination, publishing and academic community organizing.
The Institute’s international community of scholars is engaged in research, postgraduate training and dissemination of knowledge in furtherance of the purposes and principles of international law. This inter-university Institute cooperates closely with and supports the Dutch universities’ activities in the relevant disciplines and is in turn vastly networked to universities and institution, governments and NGOs on a global level.

The Ministry of Security and Justice is responsible for maintaining the rule of law in the Netherlands, so that people can live together in freedom, regardless of their life-style or views. The Ministry is working towards a safer, more just society by giving people legal protection and, where necessary, intervening in their lives. We sometimes have to take radical measures: divesting parents of parental responsibility, for example, or putting convicted criminals in prison. We also give people new prospects: for example, we help prisoners return to society and provide support for victims of crime. These are all measures that only the Ministry of Security and Justice is entitled to take. The law is about people.
The International Centre for Counter-Terrorism (ICCT) – The Hague is an independent think tank and knowledge hub that focuses on information creation, collation and dissemination pertaining to the preventative and international legal aspects of counter-terrorism.
ICCT’s work focuses on themes at the intersection of preventing and countering violent extremism and human rights and rule of law related aspects of counter-terrorism. As such, the centre works on, for instance, de- and counter-radicalisation, the rehabilitation and reintegration of violent extremist offenders, the promotion of civil society actors and victims’ voices in countering violent extremism, preventing and countering incitement to terrorism, and effective rule of law based approaches in terrorism court cases.
ICCT – The Hague connects academics, policymakers, civil society actors and practitioners from different fields by providing a platform for productive collaboration, practical analysis, and exchange of experiences and expertise, with the ultimate aim of identifying innovative, effective, and comprehensive approaches to preventing and countering terrorism.
