Magda Koole LL.M. is the Chairman of the ICD’s Steering Committee and a Senior Judge in the District Court of The Hague. She graduated in 1990 from the VU University Amsterdam. After having worked as an attorney-at-law, she became a judge in 2004. In 2013 she was appointed as Examining Judge for international crimes. The position includes conducting investigations for the District Court and for the Court of Appeal in The Hague, as well as carrying out requests for legal assistance in international crimes cases from the international tribunals in The Hague and foreign national courts. Finally, she is a member of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law in Sanremo.
Judge Christine Van den Wyngaert (Belgium, 1952) graduated from Brussels University in 1974 and obtained a PhD in International Criminal Law in 1979. She was a professor of law at the University of Antwerp (1985 - 2005) where she taught criminal law, criminal procedure, comparative criminal law and international criminal law. She authored numerous publications in all these fields. She has extensive international judicial experience. She served in the International Court of Justice as an ad hoc judge in the Arrest Warrant Case (2000 - 2002) and was elected as a judge in the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia where she served for more than five years (2003 - 2009). She now serves as a judge at the International Criminal Court, to which she was elected for a nine year mandate (2009- 2018). For a more extensive bio, please see here.
Judge Alphons Orie is a permanent judge of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia since 2001 and a Judge of the Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals. He graduated from Leyden University in 1971. After having worked as a research assistant at the Law Faculty of that University, he joined the Law Firm of Wladimiroff & Spong in The Hague in 1980. He practiced mainly in the field of international criminal law and Supreme Court litigation. In 1997 he was appointed Justice of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands and served in the Criminal Chamber. In 2001 he was elected as judge in the ICTY.
Professor Göran Sluiter is a Professor of International Criminal Procedural Law at the University of Amsterdam. Additionally, he is a attorney-at-law at Böhler Advocaten (from 1 January 2014, this firm will continue under the name of Prakken d’Oliveira Advocaten) in Amsterdam. Professor Sluiter has published widely in the field of international criminal procedural law. In 2005, he received a VIDI grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). As a result of that grant, in 2013, the International Criminal Procedure—Principles and Rules (G. Sluiter, et al., [eds.] Oxford University Press, 2013, 1800 pp.) was published. Since 2003, Sluiter has also been active in the practice of law, first as a substitute Judge until 2010, when he became active as an attorney-at-law in Amsterdam with a specialty in international and cross-border criminal law. He represents suspects and victims of international crimes in both Dutch and international criminal cases.
Simon Minks LL.M. is a senior prosecutor and has been prosecuting high profile cases (mostly) on the appeals level for the last eight years. Such cases involve, inter alia, international organized crime, terrorism, piracy and war crimes like the cases against the former Afghan generals and the case against the Dutchman Van Anraat (i.e. the use of chemical weapons against the Kurds). Prior to his current position, Mr. Minks was, e.g., a prosecutor at the district level and a lawyer. He has also served as the Dutch prosecutorial liaison to the ad hoc Tribunals and the ICC.
